Cape Reinga

We took advantage of a fine spell in the winter weather and loaded up the Electra Glide Ultra to do a weekend run up to Cape Reinga, a trip I last did in about 1998 on a Ducati 900 SS, how times change!

The ride between Pukekohe and Whangarei is uneventful, lots of traffic, crawling through towns etc but opens up a fair bit once through Whangarei. Due to the lack of time available we decided to base ourselves in Pihia for both Friday and Saturday nights.

The return trip to the Cape from Pihia is about 400kms so we left early Saturday morning. The riding to the Cape is easy, lots of sweeping corners etc so we were able to make decent time. We were restricted to SH10 as SH1 was closed due to a slip but there is plenty of nice places to stop like Cable Bay, Mangonui etc.

Cape Reinga is an interesting spot, a lot of history and plenty of information available and some great scenery. Sunday, we had a great visit to the Treaty grounds in Waitangi, took in a cultural show and soaked up the history before heading home.

The HD Ultra is a great choice for two up touring, plenty of room for gear and the little critter on the back was extremely comfortable!
