East Cape on Street Glide

The East Cape has long been on the “to do” list of motorcyclists both local and international. We left Pukekohe on Friday mid morning with the goal of getting into our Waihau Bay hotel that evening. The ride from Opotiki onwards is custom made for bikes, long sweeping corners, Pacific Ocean on one side and rolling farmland the other, the 400 km day seemed to fly past. The overnight accommodation at the Waihau Bay Lodge is affordable with great food and cold beer, would recommend.

Day 2 was hot, we hit 34 degrees in Tologa Bay! The road between Waihau and Gisborne is tight and twisty, tiring but fun to ride. From Gisborne we cut inland to stop at the Tiniroto pub for a rest and refreshments before on to Napier for night 2.

Napier was its usual laid back self and the next morning well rested and fed we hit SH5 to Taupo. We battled some serious crosswinds heading out of town and was a relief to get into the cover of the Maungaharuru ranges. From Taupo it was a quick run home up SH1. A great ride all round and highly recommended, I’d probably add another day to fully appreciate it all.
